I'm Brazilian, I've always loved music and since I was little I buy and I listen to rock.
During the 70's I met a magazine called Pop, which I christened German Pop, since it was of Germanic origin, I did not understand what was written in the great majority, but it was there that I met the groups that I publish here on the blog today. Rock made in Germany is one of my favorites, but my taste is very eclectic.

Frames - In Via 2012 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

German band FRAMES was formed in 2007, consisting of Jonas Meyer (guitars), Manuel Schoenfeld (keyboards), Greger Röhring (bass) and Kiryll Kulakowski (drums). Their aim is to create extraordinary music, constructing unique musical landscapes inspired by mosaic patterns.

So far this has lead to the EP "CXXIV" issued in 2009, with a subsequent record deal with SPV sublabel Steamhammer following in its wake. Around the time that EP was recorded, Röhring decided to leave the band, and was replaced by Julian Hoffman.

Mad Tea Party - The Marionette 1997 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

It is rare, but with MAD TEA PARTY we get something German that actually sounds like German, thanks to the members of this highly skilled German quintet, who have all visited the Cologne Conservatory at some point, have a knack for combining accessible, catchy melodies with complex musical structures.
You could name Yes, King Crimson and "Foxtrot"-era Genesis as their main source of inspiration although you'll only hear those influences very intermittently on their albums. Other references are probably Gino Vanelli, Saga, Gentle Giant and Tea In The Sahara - but only very roughly. This five-piece from Cologne are a bit hard to classify, although they seem to fit better in the neo-progressive spectrum.
Still, their music requires multiple listens to be completely understood. The combination of different times and shifting of accents does not end up in 'fooling around with timings', but also makes it hard to do full comparisons to other bands, much in the vein of The Flower Kings or Dragonfly.
MAD TEA PARTY's mini-CD as well as their full-length album "The Marionette" showcase some impressive instrumental work and solid drumming, as the band works its way through a series of short but colorful numbers alternating with melodious, catchy ballads and solid vocals throughout. The full CD features a couple of lengthy pieces, one of them a true-blue prog piece clocking in at almost 20 minutes where the guys really show their teeth and treat the listener to a roller-coaster of moods, themes and odd-time signatures. This track alone is worth the value of the album.
The band no longer exists but vocalist Alexandre Zindel and guitarist Markus Sagschneider, who were responsible for most of the compositions, now function as a duo under the name Two High.
Fans of the mentioned bands and neo-prog in general will certainly appreciate MAD TEA PARTY.

Martigan - Distant Monsters 2015 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

This Cologne-based foursome from the mid-80's plays some fine neo-prog in the best tradition of IQ, JADIS, PENDRAGON, early MARILLION and SAGA, but with a subtle and very pleasant flavour of their own. They went through quite a few line changes and now feature Alex Bisch on drums, brother Björn Bisch on guitars, Peter Kindler on bass, Oliver Strahl on keyboards and Kai Marckwordt on bass, guitar, sax, flute and lead vocals (a cross between Phil Collins and Dave Cousins, his vocals are truly outstanding).

Since the mid 90's, the band released two full-length albums and a maxi CD before the excellent "Man of the Moment" (2002); this one is the most mature of the lot and contains no weak tracks. Although no one really stands out, the musicianship is always sharp, the songwriting well crafted and the vocals sincere and powerful. If you wish, you can hear the entire album on their website; the files are highly compressed, however, and the sound quality is very poor.

If you're into neo prog and the words 'strongly melodic', 'accessible' and 'lush/full sound' appeal to you, you definitely ought to give their 2002 album a try. We are talking major-league neo-prog here.

Morphelia - Prognocircus 2003 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

The band MORPHELIA was formed in Lower Saxony, Germany in 1999 by guitarist Guido Froehlich and keyboard player Guenter Gruenebast and drummer Elmar de Groot, when the three got together to have a jam session. Both Froehlich and Gruenebast had previously played with progressive rock band PEACOCK for almost 15 years and de Groot had played with KLEINHEIDE and other local bands prior to joining the other two musicians.

The band went without a name for a couple of years, until 2001, when singer Kurt Stwrtetschka joined the band, and MORPHELIA was officially born. Up to this point, the band had gone through several bass players, but finally a permanent fifth member was found in bassist Renko Rickerts.

In 2003, the band released its first album "Prognocircus", which received very positive reviews in the local press. The band took a full six years to release its follow-up album "Waken the Nightmare" a double concept album. Among the band's influences are DREAM THEATER, SAGA, PINK FLOYD and MARILLION.

Subsignal - Beautiful & Monstrous 2009 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

Founded in Munich, Germany in 2007

German outfit SUBSIGNAL was at first a side project for Sieges Even members Arno Menses (vocals) and Markus Steffen (guitars). The first creative output from this duo actually made it onto the Sieges Even album Paramount - a track called Eyes Wide Open.

In the summer of 2008 they left Sieges Even, and decided to turn this side project into a band, and with the addition of Ralf Schwager (bass), Roel van Helden (drums) and David Bertok (keyboards) a full line-up was in place. The aim of the band is to more or less continue where Sieges Even left off, but with a greater variety in terms of musical expressions.

In the spring of 2009 they started recording material for their first production, and in September 2009 the debut album Beautiful and Monstrous was released.

T - Epistrophobia 2016 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

Thomas Thielen - Born 1976-03-23 (Germany)

Born and based in Germany, Thomas Thielen (SCYTHE) is the person behind the two albums so far released under the project name t. Initially a keyboard player, he started taking piano lessons in 1980. One year prior to finishing those he joined a band in 1992. Although that experience apparently was rather uneventful, it lead to Thielen changing his choice of main instrument; and during his tenure with this group he decided to start learning the guitar.

Soon after he joined a blues band as bassist; but that did not last too long either. It was a useful experience nonetheless; as the lack of rehearsing, planning and innovation led Thielen to want to do the exact opposite in his music. Around this time he started checking out a band called Marillion; which subsequently made him discover early 70's Genesis. While looking up this "mythic" music he also started taking singing lessons; from what one can read on his homepage, this was the start of a long and still ongoing journey of discovery and evolvement.

POWDS CON FUSION was the next band project Thielen got involved in; and after this outfit folded three members from that band, including Thielen, formed SCYTHE along with a bass player.
The recording of SCYTHE's second album "Divorced land" was a nice learning experience for Thielen, and a direct result of the knowledge acquired in those sessions was that he set up his own home studio. Galileo Records, who had released this production, was persuaded to release Thielen's first solo production "Naive" in 2002; issued under the moniker t.

The release was met with critical acclaim, and work began on a second solo album soon after. This follow-up release, "Voices" was issued by Galileo Records in 2006.

Taking cues from early GENESIS, Thielen has created two albums where this symphonic foundation has been mixed with impulses from acts like MARILLION (Hogarth era), PORCUPINE TREE and GAZPACHO; modern symphonic rock with leanings towards ambient music.

The Healing Road - Birdbrain's Travels 2014 (Germany, Neo-Prog)

THE HEALING ROAD is the moniker used by German composer and multi-instrumentalist Hanspeter Hess when releasing his musical creations.

He started recording his own compositions in 2005, and with contributions from friends and aquaintances 2006 saw the release of the first album "The Healing Road".

Hess took part in the "Hope | Omid" project instigated by the the German Spock's Beard fanclub "The Bearded" in 2007 by contributing a song from his debut album, and later the same year the second production issued under The Healing Road moniker, "Timanfaya", was released.

2008 saw this project signed to French Label Musea Records, who subsequently re-released "Timanfaya", and in December 2008 the third creation "Tales From The Dam" was released; issued as a LP and CD bundle.
