I'm Brazilian, I've always loved music and since I was little I buy and I listen to rock. During the 70's I met a magazine called Pop, which I christened German Pop, since it was of Germanic origin, I did not understand what was written in the great majority, but it was there that I met the groups that I publish here on the blog today. Rock made in Germany is one of my favorites, but my taste is very eclectic.

Love Machine - A Present to the Galaxy 2014 (Germany, Krautrock,Psychedelic Space Rock)
LOVE MACHINE was founded consisting of members from the German
Düsseldorf/Köln region. While showing a proper psychedelic/space rock
orientation, influences are also coming from the afro- & latin
american tradition, krautrock and US westcoast psychedelia. Amongst
others main inspirations are noted deriving from The Grateful Dead,
Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke, where the lyrics
are focussed on mental abysses, myth and utopian ideas.
They were ready to offer their debut 'A Present To The Galaxy' in 2014, two years later the matured follower album 'Circles' could be released on Tonzonen Records. Amon Düül 2 meets The Allman Brothers Band - a real trademark is the intriguing live presence including lively rock jams as well as floating and hypnotic parts. Furthermore singer Marcel Rösche adds an unique sign with his mournful and wailing vocals.
- Marcel Rösche / vocals, percussion
- Felix Wursthorn / guitar, synthesizer

Mad Tea Party - The Marionette 1997 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
It is rare, but with MAD TEA PARTY we get something German that actually
sounds like German, thanks to the members of this highly skilled German
quintet, who have all visited the Cologne Conservatory at some point,
have a knack for combining accessible, catchy melodies with complex
musical structures.
You could name Yes, King Crimson and "Foxtrot"-era Genesis as their main source of inspiration although you'll only hear those influences very intermittently on their albums. Other references are probably Gino Vanelli, Saga, Gentle Giant and Tea In The Sahara - but only very roughly. This five-piece from Cologne are a bit hard to classify, although they seem to fit better in the neo-progressive spectrum.
Still, their music requires multiple listens to be completely understood. The combination of different times and shifting of accents does not end up in 'fooling around with timings', but also makes it hard to do full comparisons to other bands, much in the vein of The Flower Kings or Dragonfly.
MAD TEA PARTY's mini-CD as well as their full-length album "The Marionette" showcase some impressive instrumental work and solid drumming, as the band works its way through a series of short but colorful numbers alternating with melodious, catchy ballads and solid vocals throughout. The full CD features a couple of lengthy pieces, one of them a true-blue prog piece clocking in at almost 20 minutes where the guys really show their teeth and treat the listener to a roller-coaster of moods, themes and odd-time signatures. This track alone is worth the value of the album.
The band no longer exists but vocalist Alexandre Zindel and guitarist Markus Sagschneider, who were responsible for most of the compositions, now function as a duo under the name Two High.
Fans of the mentioned bands and neo-prog in general will certainly appreciate MAD TEA PARTY.

Werwolf (Werewolf Art Rock) - Creation 1982 (Germany, Prog Folk)
WERWOLF (WEREWOLF), a band from Olpe in the Sauerland in Germany, was formed in 1970 by Peter Besting (born 2/4/1951 in Olpe) on drums and vocals, Hartwig Kugoth on guitar and Peter Lorenz on bass. Before, Peter Besting had already been playing for a year in the band Age. The band name had no deeper meaning but was simply a reference to STEPPENWOLF whose recordings the original member of WERWOLF appreciated a lot. They bought their first large PA equipment form the SCORPIONS' mastermind Rudolf Schenker in the early seventies. After rehearsing in a self-built and soundproof wooden hut with freezing temperatures during the winter, WERWOLF changed their rehearsal room into Peter Besting's newly built house in Wenden in 1972. In the course of time other musicians joined the band: Jürgen Göckler from Olpe on keyboards and as background singer, Michael Schlimm from Olpe on saxophone and on cross flute and singer Ellen Wiederstein from Attendorn. When Peter Lorenz quit, Hartwig Kugoth played double-neck guitar combining bass strings. Similar to the DOORS, Jürgen Göckler played the bass accompaniment on the keyboard whenever Hartwig Kugoth played the high notes. With this line-up, WERWOLF recorded a thirty minute demo tape in the Studio Eden in Lüdenscheid in May 1979 in order to gain a record deal, but without success. After several changes of the line-up, WERWOLF independently released the album "Creation" in 1982 in a limited edition of 1000 copies with Peter Besting on drums, Gerd Heuel on guitar, Burkhard Huckestein on bass, Wolfgang Unthan on keyboards, Gitta Löwenstein as singer and Jürgen Göckler as occasional guest keyboarder. WDR and SWF presented the album which is a collectors items worth more than USS50 now.
In 1992 "Creation" was reissued in the USA on CD with a new cover artwork (the Laser's Edge LE-1013). Having been a collector's item before, lately after that time a wider reputation followed and the original records sold for big bucks. Then finally, in 1997, the three tracks of the demo tape saw the light of day and were published by Garden of Delights in Germany (PGCD 03).
In the mid-eighties WERWOLF split after they had started releasing some songs in German language. In total WERWOLF performed about 150 gigs, among them as support acts for BIRTH CONTROL, ELOY, GROBSCHNITT and the FRANKFURT CITY BAND, some of which are available as soundboard recordings.
This CD-edition now contains the complete record "Creation" of 1982 as well as all three tracks of the demo tape recorded in 1979. The cover art is the American version painted in 1992 by Lee Gaskins. He renewed some details for us. The mastering was done by Bob Katz in Florida.
From the site:
http://www.blackrills.ch/Werwolf.htm The band split and reunited in 2010 with the original founder Peter Besting, the original guitarist Gerd Heuel and new musicians. The name was changed to WEREWOLF ART ROCK and the album "Mystic Land" was published in October 2014.

Martigan - Distant Monsters 2015 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
This Cologne-based foursome from the mid-80's plays some fine neo-prog
in the best tradition of IQ, JADIS, PENDRAGON, early MARILLION and SAGA,
but with a subtle and very pleasant flavour of their own. They went
through quite a few line changes and now feature Alex Bisch on drums,
brother Björn Bisch on guitars, Peter Kindler on bass, Oliver Strahl on
keyboards and Kai Marckwordt on bass, guitar, sax, flute and lead vocals
(a cross between Phil Collins and Dave Cousins, his vocals are truly
outstanding).
Since the mid 90's, the band released two full-length albums and a maxi CD before the excellent "Man of the Moment" (2002); this one is the most mature of the lot and contains no weak tracks. Although no one really stands out, the musicianship is always sharp, the songwriting well crafted and the vocals sincere and powerful. If you wish, you can hear the entire album on their website; the files are highly compressed, however, and the sound quality is very poor.
If you're into neo prog and the words 'strongly melodic', 'accessible' and 'lush/full sound' appeal to you, you definitely ought to give their 2002 album a try. We are talking major-league neo-prog here.

Morphelia - Prognocircus 2003 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
The band MORPHELIA was formed in Lower Saxony, Germany in 1999 by
guitarist Guido Froehlich and keyboard player Guenter Gruenebast and
drummer Elmar de Groot, when the three got together to have a jam
session. Both Froehlich and Gruenebast had previously played with
progressive rock band PEACOCK for almost 15 years and de Groot had
played with KLEINHEIDE and other local bands prior to joining the other
two musicians.
The band went without a name for a couple of years, until 2001, when singer Kurt Stwrtetschka joined the band, and MORPHELIA was officially born. Up to this point, the band had gone through several bass players, but finally a permanent fifth member was found in bassist Renko Rickerts.
In 2003, the band released its first album "Prognocircus", which received very positive reviews in the local press. The band took a full six years to release its follow-up album "Waken the Nightmare" a double concept album. Among the band's influences are DREAM THEATER, SAGA, PINK FLOYD and MARILLION.

Subsignal - Beautiful & Monstrous 2009 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
Founded in Munich, Germany in 2007
German outfit SUBSIGNAL was at first a side project for Sieges Even members Arno Menses (vocals) and Markus Steffen (guitars). The first creative output from this duo actually made it onto the Sieges Even album Paramount - a track called Eyes Wide Open.
In the summer of 2008 they left Sieges Even, and decided to turn this side project into a band, and with the addition of Ralf Schwager (bass), Roel van Helden (drums) and David Bertok (keyboards) a full line-up was in place. The aim of the band is to more or less continue where Sieges Even left off, but with a greater variety in terms of musical expressions.
In the spring of 2009 they started recording material for their first production, and in September 2009 the debut album Beautiful and Monstrous was released.

High Wheel - 1910 (1993) (Germany, Symphonic Prog)
Excellent Symphonic prog from Germany. Maybe the best band from Germany
on the 90's scene. The music is highly influenced by PINK FLOYD but the
strong musicianship of the band members brings the music to another
dimension where their original touch takes place. They are able to add
different colors to each song, sometimes with a more accoutic feel (both
guitar and piano) sometimes with stronger compositions based on
tastefull keyboards and heavy guitar oriented passages. Vocals are in
English, excellent voice as well.
Fans of creative music began to take notice in HIGH WHEEL with their 1996 release of "There", which was on many prog-listeners top 10 lists. It is mature work, quite metaphysical. "Back from the Void", released in 2002 contains an album of very powerful progressive rock incorporating exquisite acoustic (even metal), with even symphonic extracts. A must for any symphonic prog lover!

- Andreas Lobinger / keyboard, guitar, vocals

RPWL - 2005 - World Through My Eyes 2005 (Germany, Progressive Rock)
RPWL (Risettion-Postl-Wallner-Lung - the band members) is a German
progressive rock band. The band was formed in 1997 as a Pink Floyd cover
band. After three years they started to make their own music based on
their influences from their cover band era. Their debut CD, God Has
Failed was met with international enthusiasm, praise and excellent
reviews in all the major progressive rock music magazines.
The band wanted to make a statement with Trying To Kiss The Sun in 2002, which relied more on the band as a creative entity and less on their influences. Their 3rd studio album, Stock was released in 2003. It was formed of the tracks that didn't make it onto the first 2 albums, plus a cover of Syd Barrett's "Opel", which the band used at shows as a soundcheck.
In 2005 they released their 4th studio album World Through My Eyes. This was received well by fans and off it their first single was taken- "Roses" sung by former Genesis and Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson.
Later that year, the band released their 1st live album Live- Start The Fire. The double disc album contains the whole of the band's Rockpalast concert, again featuring Ray Wilson on lead vocals for "Roses" and one other track this time, "Not About Us", which is from Ray's one and only album with Genesis entitled Calling All Stations.
In 2007, saw the release of 9--a compilation including 5 previously unreleased live songs and 4 brand new solo songs recorded together by the band. Those studio-tracks are representing the different influences in the band. 9 was released in a limited edition of 999 CDs and was only available from their website.
In February 2008, they released a new album called The RPWL Experience, which diverted greatly from previous efforts. Martien Koolen of DPRP writes, "The southern German prog rock band certainly explores new musical horizons on this album as some songs even sound raw and unpolished."

Shades of Dawn - From Dusk till Dawn 2006 (Germany, Symphonic Prog)
The self-proclaimed "only prog band from Dusseldorf," has its roots in a
band named Kawumm. In 1993 they added vocalist/guitarist Hans Juergen
Klein, changed the name to Shades of Dawn, and saw the departure of the
original lead guitarist. In '94 they recorded previously written
material, but lack of finances forced them to put the project on the
shelf.
In '95, the keyboardist and bass player, were replaced by Cyrill Stoletzky, and Theo Labs (respectively). This added a fresh dimension to the bands sound, and set the course for their musical direction.
With the lineup of Hans-Jürgen Klein on lead vocals and guitars, Peter Schneider on keyboards, Christopher Struwe on drums, Theo Labs on bass, and Cyrill Stoletzky on keyboards, they set out to record their first album in 1997. This would become 1998's "The Dawn of Time." That year they also played the Burg Herzburg Festival. However, the newfound success was not enough to keep Stoletzky and Labs in the band. They would return for appearances as guest musicians.
The ensuing years saw more personnel changes, with new additions, members returning (as guests, or permanent), and leaving again. During this time they recorded the track "Plenty of Gold" for a sampler album, which has become a cult favorite with the fans. The band also did some work for television soundtracks. The material from the first album was unearthed, re-mastered, and released as "The Slaughterhouse tapes." All the while they kept up with live performances, even with an ever-fluid lineup.
In 2005 they recorded the album "From Dusk Till Dawn," which is set for worldwide release by Musea in 2006.
This is a modern band with strong symphonic components. They bring a classic prog sound (Yes, Camel, Eloy) into the present. For a band that can't seem to keep a steady group together, they manage to keep going. Looking for a band to play in? Chances are these guys have an opening.

Sirius - Running to paradise 1982 (Germany, Symphonic Prog)
Obviously, this is keyboard driven music. However, they did add strings and flute to "Running to Paradise." The likely comparisons are to Drangonfly, Flame Dream, and England. Neubauer's piano has been compared to (of all people) Liberace. He also dabbled in some sitar on "The Three Bushes." Both albums are considered worthy contributions to the symphonic prog pantheon.

T - Epistrophobia 2016 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
Thomas Thielen - Born 1976-03-23 (Germany)
Born and based in Germany, Thomas Thielen (SCYTHE) is the person behind the two albums so far released under the project name t. Initially a keyboard player, he started taking piano lessons in 1980. One year prior to finishing those he joined a band in 1992. Although that experience apparently was rather uneventful, it lead to Thielen changing his choice of main instrument; and during his tenure with this group he decided to start learning the guitar.
Soon after he joined a blues band as bassist; but that did not last too long either. It was a useful experience nonetheless; as the lack of rehearsing, planning and innovation led Thielen to want to do the exact opposite in his music. Around this time he started checking out a band called Marillion; which subsequently made him discover early 70's Genesis. While looking up this "mythic" music he also started taking singing lessons; from what one can read on his homepage, this was the start of a long and still ongoing journey of discovery and evolvement.
POWDS CON FUSION was the next band project Thielen got involved in; and after this outfit folded three members from that band, including Thielen, formed SCYTHE along with a bass player.
The recording of SCYTHE's second album "Divorced land" was a nice learning experience for Thielen, and a direct result of the knowledge acquired in those sessions was that he set up his own home studio. Galileo Records, who had released this production, was persuaded to release Thielen's first solo production "Naive" in 2002; issued under the moniker t.
The release was met with critical acclaim, and work began on a second solo album soon after. This follow-up release, "Voices" was issued by Galileo Records in 2006.
Taking cues from early GENESIS, Thielen has created two albums where this symphonic foundation has been mixed with impulses from acts like MARILLION (Hogarth era), PORCUPINE TREE and GAZPACHO; modern symphonic rock with leanings towards ambient music.

The Pink Mice - In Action 1971 (Germany, Krautrock, Symphonic Prog)
The Pink Mice is a German band of the early 70's clearly Symphonic and
often accused of being clones of ELP, something that is not accurate,
they were close to being clones of TRIUMVIRAT (Triumvirat is also known
as The Rat, so the connection between Mice and Rat is easy to
understand) in other words they were almost clones of a so called clone
of ELP.
Some people may ask how they could follow TRIUMVIRAT if THE PINK MICE released their debut album in 1971 and The Rat in 1972, the reason is simple, TRIUMVIRAT was formed in 1969 and was already popular in Germany plus they had a lot of radio airplay with a 45 RPM released in January 1971 containing the songs "Dancers Delight" and "Timothy"..
But THE PINK MICE history gets more peculiar, their original lineup consisted of The keyboardist Peter Hetch, Peter Hesslein (Guitar & Vocals), Dieter Horns (Bass & Vocals) and the drummer Joachim Rietenbach is the exact same lineup of an already popular Hard Prog band called LUCIFER'S FRIEND but without the British vocalist John Lawton, seems that the members of LUCIFER'S FRIEND wanted to go for the Symphonic sounds with exclusively German members instead of the aggressive rock music created with Lawton as a member.
Their albums are clearly influenced by Classical Music and they don't hide this fact, the titles of the songs include among others "Capriccio Italien op.45", "Brandenburgisches Konzert Nr.3,1.Satz", "For Elise", Sonata for Klavier, etc.
During their short career they released two excellent albums "In Action" (1971) and "In Synthesizer Sound" (1972) both are highly recommended and a must have for any Symphonic proghead that loves Synth based albums, if you need more historical info about the band, check the page of LUCIFER'S FRIEND in Prog Archives.

Tonic - This way 1980 (Germany, Symphonic Prog)
TONIC is one of those bands with none or at least Little information
fron the dark ages (early 80's), as a fact we discovered the band by a
suggestion of one of the few persons who still have their only release
called "This Way" (1980).
Impressed with their pristine Symphonic sound and hints of Jazz rock started to search in all German pages and was able to get the album which didn?t provided too much information except for their lineup:
- Michael Draskowitsch (saxophones, clarinet)
- Michael Hocker (drums)
- Uwe Murschel (keyboards, trumpet, vocals)
- Andreas Taßlack (vocals, bass, metallophone, guitar)
- Roland Schmid (guitar, bass)
- Andreas Stelzer (keyboards, vocals)
- Johannes Wenzerrit (guitar, bass)
And the fact that their only album was released in 1980,
Being that the addition of such excellent lost gem can't be delayed, will be adding them right now and if I find more info and some photos will be updating the entry.

Violet District - Terminal Breath 1992 (Germany, Neo-Prog)
German outfit VIOLET DISTRICT, at first called INCUBUS, started out as a
band supporting various local bands at concerts. YES, MARILLION and
PINK FLOYD were their most important musical influences; all of which
they wanted to incorporate in their own material.
The band soon found out that it would be an advantage to record a CD to be able to expand outside of their local area, and in 1992 their debut album "Terminal Breath" saw the light of day, and was generally well received. Indeed, German label BMG Ariola got interested in the band, but sadly not interested enough to sign the act it turned out.
Various line-up changes combined with the band not being able to expand any further saw to it they eventually disbanded in 1997. Two of the members from the final line-up; Karlheinz Wallner (guitar) and Chris Postl (bass) would later resurface with RPWL a few years later, along with amongst others Jürgen "Yogi" Lang, who was a guest musician and producer on "Terminal Breath".
The other musicians involved with VIOLET DISTRICT were Thomas Falkner (bass), Christian Brenninger (drums) and Mischa Schleypen (vocals, keyboards).
The sound pursued by VIOLET DISTRICT, blending the spacey atmospheres of PINK FLOYD with the modern symphonic leanings of bands like MARILLION, resulted in a sound and style that fits the guidelines for addition to the Neo Progressive genre, and they were added to the database by the team catering for this genre.

Traumhaus - Die Andere Seite 2008 (Germany, Symphonic Prog)
TRAUMHAUS is a German group that evolved out of a mid 90s outfit called
ZWEEBACK. The group's name translates to "House of Dreams" and their
music combines hard rock with a healthy helping of atmospherics. While
the style looks back to many German bands of the 70s and 80s, their use
of angular melodies and their native tongue draws valid comparisons to
one in particular, ANYONE'S DAUGHTER. NOVALIS and GROBSCHNITT might be
other reference points, although TRAUMHAUS is somewhat more rhythmic.
The band consisted of Frank Woidich - Organ, Synthesizer, Backing
Vocals, Bernhard Selbach - Guitars, Backing Vocals, Bass Pedals, Michael
Dorniak - Backing Vocals, Bass, Drums, Alexander Weyland - Vocals,
Synthesizer, Piano and Nina Weyland - Guest Vocals.
Up until now they have only one release, their self titled 2001 debut. It consists of 8 songs over 5 minutes long, one of which is an 18 minute epic.
With the understanding that the band's sound had not yet fully developed on their first album, and future releases seem more and more doubtful, TRAUMHAUS is recommended to those who like German progressive rock with heavy guitars and bass balanced by symphonic keyboards.
- Tobias Hampl / guitars
- Alexander Weyland / vocals ,keyboards
- Hans Jrg Schmitz / drums,percussion

- Jordan H. Gazall / bass
